For technical reasons, we recommend strongly to use the Cisco Client to set up a VPN connection.
From now on, those who connect via Cisco (or another IPSec client) will have connection speeds up to 4 Mbps, as opposed to 0.75 Mbps for PPTP (the Windows VPN client) users.
Those who are already using the Cisco VPN client (IPSec) can best check whether rtrvpn.UGent.be is configured as the host and not 157.193.46.4. For PPTP connections only 157.193.46.4 can be used. In time, PPTP will be done away with.

Studwww will be replaced [8.05.2007]

The studwww server where the students' websites are located and that has been down regularly lately, will be replaced by the end of this week.
Update We 10.05: the new server for studwww is operational.:
Studwww is now being hosted on a Solaris 10 platform, including Apache2 and PHP4. PHP was compiled with the same options as on the previous Solaris 8 platform. Apache2 was compiled with suexec and the suphp module.
This implies that the students' websites will be implemented under their own userIDs. If your website experiences problems with CGI or PHP scripts in this new environment, you can best have a look at the following information:
CGI: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/suexec.html#model
PHP: the php scripts (and directories) must not be writeable for group and other users.
We are aware of the fact that certain applications will not function anymore. If these applications don't entail consequences for the safety of the server, we are prepared to investigate the problem and possibly solve it.
As every website is implemented under its userID, we can perfectly monitor the server and every abuse will be traceable. If the abuse is deliberate, we will impose sanctions. If it was deliberate, the student's website will be closed down until the student has made the adjustments to secure his website.

Problems on Studwww [19.04.2007]

14:35 Studwww, the server that contains all student websites, is down again (this morning the server was down as well). Update(14:50) Server up again but slow.

Update changes allserv - webhosting [ 9.06.2005]
To improve security it is decided to devide data in near future. Technically, this means seperate volumes on a NAS (Network Attached Storage), respectively for webhosting, mail, home directories ··· Due to this reason you'll no longer find the WWW directory the home directory. For the maintainance of personal and shared webpages this means: Personal webpages: in stead of \\allserv.UGent.be\login_name you need to mount \\webhost.UGent.be\login_name Webshares : in stead of \\allserv.UGent.be\share_name you need to mount \\webhost.UGent.be\share_name The homedirectories stay on allserv, the location to mount stays \\allserv.UGent.be\login_name Interactive log-in stays operational on allserv, files from the personal webspace can be maintained using WWW. For the shares you use the command s2s share_name. Personal webpages are reachable using http://users.ugent.be/~login_name, the original url http://allserv.ugent.be/~login_name stays working, for the time being, till june 1st 2006. Concerning webshares (shared webspaces), these are from now on reachable using the shortened url http://www.share_name.ugent.be e.g. http://www.studiekiezer.ugent.be, the original url http://allserv.ugent.be/share_name stays working till june 1st 2006. Important changes in the functionality: Php-scripts from now on run under the user's userid (formerly the webserver's). It is no longer possible change Apache options or file types using .htaccess. The use of htpasswd stays possible. The use of cgi-scripts (perl, shellscript, python, php ...) is possible. Self-compiled scripts which used to be on allserv will no longer work. Cgi-scripts need to be compiled for a linux environment. This possibility will be available in a month or two. Problems with scripts may be mailed tohelpdesk@dict.ugent.be.
At 17.00h webmail will be down for about 5 min. [ 7.06.2005]
TTSSH only by version TeraTerm Pro Web 3.1.3. [ 6.06.2005]
For security reasons, on allserv the old ssh v1 protocol is no longer supported. The description of the new version will be available as soon as possible The new version can be downloaded here.
Extra security VPN-router [02.Jun.2005]
Starting from the determination that PC's are more vulnerable concerning viruses and hacking when using a VPN-connection, on 01/06/2005 an extra protection is introduced on the VPN-router. The protection of the VPN-clients now is on the same level as the one on a secured subnet. Concretely, this means that PC's connecting through VPN from your home or student-home are protected from attacks from other PC's. The standard VPN-user (most students) only gain from this. The more advanced VPN-user will have to make a few adaptations: -FTP to public FTP-servers can only be done in 'passive mode'. -Setting up a server can only be done through the fixed ports 13001 to 13005 and FTP-servers won't work! SSH, Winscp, Remote Desktop etc... will only work through the higher mentioned ports. All this from within UGentNet (157.193.x.x.), so from outside UGentNet a VPN-connection will be needed first. For the realisation at user's side, the user will have to rely completely on his own knowledge on the matter. MSN, Skype etc... don't need any adaptation because a connection with a public server is set up first here. Obviously, illegal server activities (such as file sharing, gaming etc...) are still not allowed.
