What is an account?
Every UGent student and staff member has the right to obtain an account. When awarded your account you will receive the following:
- Your login name on the server: depending on the user group you belong to, you will obtain disk space on a Unix-server. Generally a login name consists of the first character of your first name, followed by a few characters of your surname until you have 8 characters or less when you have a short surname. The login name is assigned to you by the DICT Reception desk and can not be changed.
- Your password: In addition to a login name, you will obtain a unique password to secure your own server space. The combination of your login name and password has to be applied to log on to the server. Alter the computer generated password you received from the DICT Reception desk as soon as possible (it always consists of 8 characters).
- Your e-mail address: an e-mail address assigned at this university will generally be of the form
First_name.Surname@UGent.be. E-mail addresses are case-insensitive, i.e. no distinction will be made between lower- or upper-case characters. If you have a namesake at the university, then your e-mail address can differ from the standard.
- The general UGent password you obtained can be used for interactive usage on the server only. In you want a dial-in/VPN (for connections with UGentNet through a modem/ISDN/cable modem/ADSL) you can create a password yourself (https://password.UGent.be).
- The dial-in/VPN password and the central password can't be the same.
