Wired connection to UGentNet

Staff of faculties and departments, in UGent buildings, connect their computer to the network using a UTP cable (= wired).

Windows PCs provided by UGent are installed automatically using the "rollout" system. On these devices all necessary software is present.



In advance, the device has to be registered (see: IP registration)

and configured so that the IP settings (IP address and DNS server address) are assigned automatically. In most departments someone is appointed to do this.



Windows 8
Go to 'Control panel' - 'Network and internet' - 'Network center' - 'Ethernet' - 'Properties'. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Click the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' and then click 'Properties'. Click "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
Close all windows by clicking OK.

Windows 7
Go to "Start - Control panel - Network and Sharing Center - View network connections". Right-click the "Local Area connection" and click "Properties". If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Click the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and then click "Properties". Click "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
Close all windows by clicking OK.
