What is a distribution list?
A distribution list is an e-mail address that forwards to a maximum of 10 existing
email addresses. When one sends a message to a distribution list, it is sent to all
recipients in the distribution list. For example, you have an e-mail address that is more
closely linked to your department or recognized association within UGent
Another option is the shared mailbox. This is an extra, shared
mailbox used by several UGent staff.
To regularly send messages to a list of e-mail addresses,
you can also use a mailing list.
Also preferable if the list of addressees changes regularly.
In contrast to a shared mailbox, you can also have the emails forwarded to a distribution list
and a mailing list to external e-mail addresses.
Distribution lists can be requested by members of staff, for departments or recognized associations.
You can use them, for example, for organizing a conference or for temporary projects.
Distribution lists cannot be requested for non-profit organizations or commercial activities
that directly or indirectly have anything to do with the University.
If you want to apply for an account for a recognized student association,
you can goto the Student Activities Office.
How to request a distribution list?
A distribution list can be requested via the application form.
Take into account the following:
- the name you want, eg distibutionlist@UGent.be (there can only be 1 point in the section before the @)
- the person responsible for this distribution list (staff member of UGent)
- a short description for which the distribution list will be used
Note: Changes to pre-existing distribution lists are only possible in accordance with the aforementioned conditions.
