Tools to manage passwords
Why use a password manager?
Keeping your passwords and accounts safe: you know the rules and the tips & tricks but that doesn't mean it's easy.
- Browsers (and applications) offer to remember passwords. Convenient, but not really a good idea for security and privacy reasons.
- Often you can choose a social login and use your Facebook, Google, Twitter or other social network account to log in, instead of creating a new username/password. You then share personal data from your profile, in exchange for ease of use. Using social logins reduces the amount of passwords you have to remember, but in the event of a password leak, hackers also gain access to all of your linked accounts.
You can store your login details securely in a password manager.
- A password manager works like a vault. You get access to the digital safe with a 'key'. The "key" or "master password" is the only password you need to remember; it gives you access to all your saved passwords in the vault.
- In the vault you can store many different passwords for many different accounts so you don't have to remember them.
- The password manager can automatically fill in your password after logging in for the first time.
- After use, turn off the password manager. To use it again you only need your master password.
